Botanical Garden

Covering almost 10 hectares, Poland’s oldest botanical gardens date from 1783 and offer a decidedly relaxing daytime escape from the city. Extensive flora-filled paths wind between fountains, herb and rose gardens, lily-padded ponds, and a 250-year-old oak tree - the last remnant of primaeval forests which once covered the entire region. Arguably (but don't tell the botanists we said this) the most striking feature of the park is the 'Victoria' greenhouse complex which dates back to the park's opening and was renovated and reopened in 2020; inside you'll find all manner of exotic and tropical flora, including a macabre collection of carnivorous plants (note that the garden's greenhouses are open 10:00-14:45; closed Mon). A small antiquated 4-room museum of the oldest botanical collections of Jagiellonian University can be found in the beautiful Collegium Śniadeckiego palace building (open 10:00-14:45; closed Mon), which is also home to occasional art exhibits, while the garden sometimes hosts outdoor concerts and other events (check their FB). A great place for a romantic rendezvous or finding some peace and quiet away from the crowds.
