St. John Paul II in Tarnów

more than a year ago
Born in the small Małopolska town of Wadowice, Karol Wojtyla - the man who would become known to the world as Pope John Paul II - was a frequent visitor to Tarnów, even once remarking, “You have no idea how much I always liked going to Tarnów!” So much it would seem, that while living in nearby Kraków the future pontiff made 14 official visits, though unofficial trips are assumed to be numerous. His final (15th) visit came in June 1987, when he stayed at the Bishop’s Palace (ul. Mościckiego 6), addressing the crowds gathered below from what is today known as ‘the Papal Window.’ In the morning the Popemobile cruised north-east of the Old Town to the Church of Blessed Karolina Kózka (Pl. Ojca Świętego Jana Pawła II 1) - Tarnów’s largest place of worship - where JPII performed Kózka's beatification before a record-breaking crowd of over 2 million people. Relics from the historic event can be seen inside the church, while just outside stands one of four monuments of JPII in Tarnów. Another is easily spotted outside the Cathedral on Plac Katedralny, and has the distinction of being the very first (of hundreds) erected in Poland, unveiled as it was on June 29th, 1981. John Paul II was canonised on April 27th, 2014.
