A cottage with a sheltered leafy garden, this wonderful restaurant up the hill from Old Town serves some of the finest traditional Lithuanian food in the country. Find sumptuously designed rooms with ceilings decorated with coats of arms and paintings as well as the better-known and wonderfully cluttered rustic interior. The cepelinai are always delicious here, but more elegant dishes are on offer too, such as wine-braised venison stew with lingonberry sauce. The boards of cured meats and cheeses adorned with local leaves, sprouting seeds and honey are tastily authentic. Wash it down with craft beer or bitter brandy served in cups made of ice.

Booking a table is a must, especially on a warm evening, otherwise be prepared to wait in line at the entrance. We visited the restaurant on a busy evening. Got table at once, but had to wait for main course for more than an hour.

Definitely worth the walk up the hill. Good food, pleasant atmosphere, menu in English and superb value for money. Maestro-cards are accepted.
