Amber Museum. Lithuanian Art Museum Department (Gintaro Muziejus)

Situated inside the fabulous 19th-century neoclassical former mansion of Count Tiškevičius (Pol. Tyszkiewicz), this exemplary museum holds some 25,000 pieces of amber of which over half have insects and plants trapped inside. Telling the fascinating story of Baltic Gold, this is a wonderful place to spend an hour and is highly recommended for keeping children entertained. There are also a couple of newly renovated halls and salons with period furnishings and paintings. Near the back of the mansion is a famous rose garden, and the mansion itself also hosts the occasional concert and recital.

USA, Vermont,
This museum was interesting even to an amber ingrate like myself. Lots of big, interesting chunks of the peculiar rock. Good postcard selection at the gift desk, too. Take a walk behind the palace through the park down to the coast line and avoid the tacky Palanga bathing crowd on the beaches nearer town.
