Sultan Selim Mosque

more than a year ago
Just down the hill from the Knežina Monastery we find the Sultan Selim Mosque, reopened in 2011 following its destruction in 1992. The original was built in 1512 by the magnificently named Selim the Grim, the man who expanded the Ottoman Empire by over 70% in the 16th century. This is one of the oldest mosques in this part of the world and undoubtedly one of the most picturesque, bringing forth that magical combination of Ottoman architecture and serene Balkan countryside.
