For almost 50 years the Albanians were at war with themselves, believing (or at least pretending to believe) they were fighting to defend a Socialist paradise. The reality, as everyone knows, is somewhat different. Unlike for example the three Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, occupied by Soviet Russia for a similar amount of time, the story of Communism in Albania is a strictly internal one, and it’s only in the last few years that any effort has been made to confront the recent past. Two such examples, which also provide visitors to the country with a chance to experience some relatively well managed Dark Tourism, have recently emerged in Tirana.
