Kyiv cinemas in focus

Art house comes to Kyiv

Admirers of independent films can now rejoice. Following in the footsteps of Paris and Berlin, where cinemas showing clever low budget films turn a profit, a selected group of cinemas in Kyiv will begin showing films previously accessible only on rare or pirated DVDs. One of the oldest cinemas in the city, Kinopanorama, boldly goes where no other Ukrainian cinema has gone before…B movie wonderland. Within the project’s framework, an art house film will be shown in Kinopanorama’s main hall daily. The concept of the art house film arose in the 1940s in the US where “art house” became synonymous with cinemas specializing in “clever” foreign films shown in the original language with subtitles.
Kinopanorama C-4, Shota Rustaveli 19, MPatals Sportu, tel. 287 30 41, www.kinopanorama.com.ua.

Future Shorts

The showing of Future Shorts takes place a few times per month at different cinemas and clubs in London, Paris, Lisbon, Brussels, Edinburgh and other cities. For the past three years the biggest festival of short films in Europe has made a stop in Kyiv. Future Shorts’ aim is to filter all the nonsensical junk and provide enthusiasts with the most original, inventive and entertaining short films. Among the directors whose films have made the cut are Mike Leigh, Spike Jones, Chris Marker, Michel Gondry, Patrice Leconte and Ken Loach.
Future Shorts Kyiv operates out of the following cinemas: Zhovten, Kinopanorama, and Kyiv.

Theatre on wheels

The drive-in theatre is not a new innovation in the sphere of cinema. The world’s first drive-in appeared in America in 1933, and in the ten years that followed another four-thousand were set-up in the US alone. In Kyiv, the drive-in theatre Kinodrom opened in the summer of 2005. Show times for this theatre depend on the time of year. Throughout the summer films are shown seven days a week at 22:00, 24:00 and 02:00.
To do Kinodrom right you need to know some basics. Drive your car to the entrance of the theatre, buy a ticket, they give you a menu, park your car, tune your radio to 97.3 on the FM dial, turn your headlights off, and enjoy the film. To summon the drive-in server, turn on your hazard lights for a few seconds. Unfortunately, there are no films in English.
Kinodrom Povitroflots’kyi prosp. 10, CSK Stadion, MVokzal’na, tel. 205 04 04, www.kinodrom.kiev.ua. Tickets 50Hr.
