A beautifully renovated Neoclassical building showcases a small but excellent collection of 19th to 21st-century painting and sculpture. Quality over quantity, as we always like to say. Anyone looking for artistic excellence in Kassel owes it to themselves to head here, where some of the most exquisite work is waiting to be enjoyed. As with most artistic things in Kassel, Documenta plays a key role, taking over half of the space when it is time for the famous festival to rear its glorious head once again. The central room has several Joseph Beuys installations, most importantly the 1969 work 'The Pack', with 24 sleds rushing from a Volkswagen van. Gerhard Richter's portrait of Documenta-founder Arnold Bode and Warhol's image of Joseph Beuys nicely round off the permanent exhibition.
