Regarded as one of the world's great coastal roads, the Causeway Coastal Route is an absolute must for any visitor to Ireland - north or south. The signposted journey stretches more than 150 miles and connects Belfast with Derry City via some of the island's most stunning coastal and country landscapes.

The journey begins on the fringes of Belfast; follow the M5 before veering off to begin your coastal hug, passing Carrickfergus's magnificent Norman Castle and detouring into the hidden gem that is Islandmagee where you can feel the seaspray on The Gobbins Cliff Path.

The Route continues its dramatic journey edging the Irish Sea and taking in charming towns and villages such as Glenarm, Cushendun and the breathtaking Torr Head. A further detour through the Glens of Antrim unveils emerald hills, rushing waterfalls and woodland walks. And a stop at the floral delight that is the vilage of Broughshane leads you to nearby Slemish mountain, said to be where a young St. Patrick tended his sheep.

Take a short ferry ride from Ballycastle to tranquil Rathlin Island with its wild seals and puffin colony, then return to the 'mainland', stopping off for tea or a bit of surfing at the busy seaside towns of Portrush or Portstewart. The world famous Giant's Causeway with its state-of-the-art Visitor Centre, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Old Bushmills Distillery and romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle make a mighty foursome as you continue along the North Antrim Coast.

Next up, the cliff-clinging Mussenden Temple, thatched Hezlett House, golden sweep of Benone Strand and dramatic Binevenagh plateau add to the must-see scenic stops.Then continue onwards to Limavady and the beautiful Roe Valley before ending your journey in the vibrant walled city of Derry.

This really is Northern Ireland at its best, so take at least a couple of days to fully explore the sights, myths and legends that make up this unique journey.
