We love Kassel with all of our might, that is beyond doubt, but we’re honest enough to admit that the city isn’t going to rouse the hearts of international sports fans in the same way that Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, Hamburg and others might. Why should it? Kassel is a small town in comparison to its more celebrated countrymen, it simply does not have the financial clout to produce clubs that can compete on a national scale.

But since when has that mattered? Kassel is the heart of Germany and Germany is sports mad, so there is plenty of live sport that you can sink your teeth into while in town. More often than not this will mean watching lower league competition but there is something undeniably romantic about that, especially as the top tiers become more and more of a business. Give us a KSV Hessen home game over another Bayern match any day of the week.

KSV are the town’s main football club, while the Kassel Huskies represent the town on the ice. MT Melsungen are the town’s main top flight club, flying the Kassel (well, Melsungen actually) flag in the handball Bundlesliga. There are a number of other sport clubs worth keeping an eye out for while in town, and watching a game might just remind you why we all love sport in the first place.  You can usually rock up and buy tickets on the door as well, which is always a plus.
