Locals will delight if you even attempt (badly or otherwise) to use an expression or two of Serbian. The following expressions represent a good introduction.

Serbian is a South Slavic language, closely related in linguistic terms with Bosnian, Croatian and Montenegrin, and also shares many words with other Slavic languages. Although it may seem near impossible to pronounce at first glance, it's an almost perfectly phonetic langauage (i.e. spelled how it sounds). Cyrillic script, the formerly favoured mode of written text is slowly being succeeded by Latin script with south Slavic characters (š,đ,č,ć,ž).
