Budapest is a far more cyclist friendly city than it was only a decade ago. But to feel truly unrestrained on two wheels you should head for the riverside cycle path in Buda. You begin by cycling to the Northern tip of Margaret Island and then crossing over to Buda via the Arpad Bridge. Follow the signs to the riverside bike trail. This well beaten but very pleasant path will take you past the Roman ruins at Aquincum to the picturesque town of Szentendre, which is 20km to the north of the city. If returning to Budapest along the cycle train sounds a bit too much like hard work, you can catch one of the boats sailing from Szentendre back to downtown Budapest (alternately, simply jump on the train).
