Zandvoort was first mentioned around 1100 and throughout the ages the village primarily depended on the fishing industry. During the Middle Ages, the coastal area around Zandvoort was controlled by the Lords of Brederode, until their power gradually vanished in the late 17th century. In the early 19th century, Zandvoort slowly developed as a beach resort and many of the rich and famous of that era came here to relax next to the North Sea. In 1881, a railway line was opened that connected Zandvoort directly to Amsterdam, which accelerated the evolution of the town’s tourism industry. World War II brought devastation to Zandvoort, as the area became an important part of the Atlantic Wall built by the Nazis. After the war, however, the town was quickly restored and in 1948 the race track was opened. From then on, the history of Zandvoort can only be described as prosperous and it still attracts people from all walks of life to its beautiful beaches and alfresco cafés.
