This exhibition at the city’s Jewish Museum (Jüdisches Museum Berlin) focuses on the story of the Golem of Jewish folklore (not the Gollum of Lord of the Rings fame) and presents the mythical creature from a variety of perspectives. Covering its inception in ancient Jewish history the exhibition tracks the legend of this creature, which is said to be formed out of a lifeless substance such as dust or earth and brought to life by ritual incantations and sequences of Hebrew letters, through periods where it was used, most famously in Prague, to protect Jews from persecution from the Holy Roman Emperor to its role in popular storytelling in film.

The exhibition features medieval manuscripts and works of art from the last two hundred years such as paintings, sculpture, video, installation art, photography and illustrations to tell the story of the Golem and the legends that sprang up around it.
