The State Theatre builds on a long tradition; in 1606 the adjacent Ottoneum was the first purpose-built theatre north of the Alps. The theatre built to replace it in 1909 was one of Germany's largest, and was replaced in 1959 by the current modern building. Plays (mainly in German), concerts and other performances are organised very regularly.
