Tierpark Sababurg

  Sababurg 1, Hofgeismar      +49 5671 766 49 90     more than a year ago
Founded in 1571 at the foot of landgrave Wilhelm IV's hunting lodge, Tierpark Sababurg is the oldest originally preserved zoo in Europe. Around 900 animals from 80 species including wolves, bison, moose, wild horses, wild boar, lemurs, eagles and owls live here in large and natural enclosures. There's not only plenty of space for the large animals to roam; visitors can also enjoy the wide panoramas of the landscape, with views of Sababurg castle. Keep an eye on the feeding schedule to see the otters, penguins, meerkats and other animals in action; in July you can attend the feeding of the wolves too. The park is especially fun for children, as they can get up close to various animals and even pet and feed them. The park has several restaurants and cafés, a museum, and it's even possible to prepare your own meal at the scenic barbecue spot by a lake. In summer, spare your feet by hopping on the eco-friendly Tierpark-Express bus which tours the expansive grounds (€3).
