Lucerne

Sonnenberg Walk

more than a year ago

An easily accessible walk from downtown Lucerne up through the Gütsch forest and on to Sonnenberg, where you have picture postcard views of Lucerne, Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps. To get to the vantage points, it will take you around an hour. You can start the walk from various places; the closest access from town is via Hochbühlstrasse (A-4), continue straight up the road, which becomes a steep path until you get to the Gütsch forest entrance. Walk along the main path through the forest, following the yellow signs to Sonnenberg. If walking at dawn or dusk you may spot a deer or two here. There are two restaurants on the way (one of which has mini-golf) and a few farms which sell their homemade produce (check for signs on the farmhouses, usually there is a room with the produce, a price list and a piggy bank, where you can pay). Continue past Hotel Restaurant Sonnenberg and the funicular station and you'll come to an asphalt viewing station. From there you can walk for another ten minutes to capture great views of Mount Pilatus. You can either continue further or head back to town. If you want to save your knees you can take the funicular, which has been in service for over 100 years, back down to Kriens (8Sfr one way, 12Sfr return) and then hop on bus N°1 or 71 from Kriens Buschleife back to Lucerne.

Thank you so much for this walk information - we did it today and it was amazing. Hard work up the hill for the first 15 minutes but worth it! It took us about 90 mins, we stopped a lot to take photos! The funicular was brilliant and the bus back to Lucerne easy. Thank you!
