Lucerne’s renowned Fasnacht carnival begins at 05:00 on Dirty Thursday (Schmotzige Donnschtig), when Brueder Fritschi, the imaginary chief of the Zunft zum Safran guild, becomes the centre of attention. This figure dates back to 1446 when the townspeople celebrated their victory in battle over the Habsburgs. Brueder Fritschi lands by boat at Schweizerhofquai and officially opens Fasnacht with the Urknall (a loud bang) and the Fötzeliräge (confetti rain) on Kapellplatz. The celebrations continue with the Fritschi parade in the afternoon and continue on Monday with the Weyumzug, another big parade. It all ends on Shrove Tuesday (Güdiszischtig) with the so-called Monstercorso, a huge parade of carnival big bands (Guggemusig) and lanterns in the evening.
