Hölloch cave

 (+41) 41 390 40 40     more than a year ago

The Hölloch is Europe's most extensive underground cave system, with more than 190km of natural tunnels. While you could do real expeditions here, this tour is an easy, family-friendly one which gives you a short but fascinating glimpse of the caves. In a group of max. 30, a guide takes you into the caves and tells you all about their geology and exploration. Though easy, this is a real tour of pristine caves, not caves fully fitted out with paths, bridges and lights. Your only lights are the carbide lamps every visitor is given! Once you're through, take the opportunity to see some of the rugged, quite unique landscape of the valley you're in, Muotathal. The tour lasts 1.5h, you can just turn up at the meeting point Hölloch caretaker hut in Muotathal. You need walking shoes or solid trainers, no sandals! As the temperature in the caves is always 6°C, you'll need warm clothes, and it's good to wear a rainjacket and clothes you're not fussy about, as the caves are damp. Train and bus from Lucerne takes approx. 1.5h, get off at Hölloch, Muotathal. Parking for cars available on site, at the restaurant Hölloch.
