Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe

  Kleine Scheidegg      (+41) 33 828 72 33     more than a year ago

Jungfraujoch is probably Switzerland’s best known mountain destination and at 3,454m above sea level it is Europe’s highest train station. The stop is not actually on a peak but rather on a pass between the famous Jungfrau and Mönch mountains, both towering at 4,000m. Up here, there are prepared paths through the snow and several viewing platforms (a lift takes you up to the top one called the Sphinx). From there you have a heart-stopping view over the Aletsch glacier, probably the most impressive glacier in the Alps. In the 1930s mountaineers began to cut tunnels and halls into the eternal ice and the so-called Eispalast was born, which now extends over 1,000m2. Definitely take a walk through it. Many consider a visit to Switzerland incomplete without a visit to the Jungfraujoch. The ride up there is impressive too - and quite expensive. From Lucerne, take a train to Interlaken (change at Bern), then one to Lauterbrunnen, from there another one to Kleine Scheidegg (3hrs15min from Lucerne), where you board the final cogwheel train that takes you up to the top through tunnels and with spectacular views at the Eigergletscher stop (another 55min).

You can book a daily bus tour to Jungfraujoch from Lucerne here.
