Lëpusha

share

After driving through Tamara and Selca, the road east goes higher and enters the beech and pine forests around the 1355-metre-high Bordolec pass. Turn right at the pass and you'll soon arrive at the enchanting village of Lëpusha, 90km from Shkodra and set in a green, narrow valley near the Montenegrin border, surrounded by peaks rising up to 2000m. It's named after the lepushtra or marsh marigold (caltha palustris) that grows here. There's deep snow here for a third of the year, but in high summer it's a glorious holiday destination with several guesthouses catering to visitors' needs. Hiking trails of varying difficultly branch out in all directions - along the valley, through the forests to the Ujvara Lëpushe waterfall, across barren hills to hamlets like Vukel to the south, and steep up to the Maja e Vajusha peak at the top of the valley, with some of Albania's highest peaks beyond. The Logu i Bjeshka folk festival in early August (on the 7th in 2022) sees performers from across Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro and emigrants from far overseas gather here for celebrations with music, dance and a market with local products - and there's a Miss Bjeshka beauty contest with traditional costumes too.
