Warsaw's oldest and most beautiful cemetery. Famous corpses include the poet Leopold Staff, aviators Żwirko and Wigura, the Nobel prize winner Władysław Reymont and CIA spy Ryszard Kukliński. It also contains the 'grave' of Stefan Starzyński, the mayor of Warsaw at the time of the German invasion. His body was never recovered after he was detained by the Gestapo. Vast areas of the cemetery are taken up by Home Army soldiers killed during the Warsaw Uprising, and indeed, there are graves here from all major conflicts to have taken place in Poland over the last 200 years. Please note, opening times are much shorter during the winter months (until 18:00).
