An authentic thin-crust pizza, fresh sushi, hearty pork knuckle or an Armenian shashlik are never far from your fingertips in the Latvian capital and many restaurants in Riga now offer cheap lunch specials to lure diners into their establishments (see their respective Facebook pages for offers). You can find refined establishments where kings, presidents and pop stars have dined that will cost you a fortune as well as cheap 24-hour takeaways that cater to the clubbing crowd. The old town is a logical place to look for a good meal, but bear in mind that many of Riga’s best restaurants are located in the city centre where most locals also find sustenance. Thrifty Latvians often find it difficult to leave their servers dzeramnauda (literally drinking money), but a tip of 10% is expected from foreigners at most Riga restaurants. The average cost of a main course is listed in parentheses. Restaurants are permitted to operate until 24:00 and can seat four people at one table indoors (not from the same household) or more people outdoors.
