An Italian libretto in four acts largely based on Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’, Otello was first performed in Milan in 1887. It came from the mind and hands of Guiseppe Verdi, although the legendary artist had to be gently coaxed out of a threatened retirement before it came into being.
