A portrait can tell a thousand facts, but the work of Austrian expressionist Richard Gerstl operates on a different plane entirely. His life was intense one, and that intensity shone through in the psychological intuitiveness of his portraits, each revealing previously hidden traits in the subject. Gerstl never received the acclaim he deserved in his lifetime, but people are slowly waking up to his talent and importance.
