The Black Spring exhibit is dedicated to the emotions created by the oppressive socio-political situation in Poland during the communist era, and its expression in music. As Polish punk rock groups formed at the end of the '70s, creating a variety of new musical genres, the restless social and political situation in 1981 brought about by the introduction of martial law further encouraged artists to put their energy into political dissent and rebellion. With 1980s Wrocław as the backdrop and local music in the foreground, photographs, audio, films and archival materials will be on display. Trends in independent music offer a fascinating way to frame the historical transformations happening in the political and societal spheres during the years of the emerging Solidarity movement, the period of martial law, and the eventual fall of the communist government. The title "Black Spring" eludes to Antoni Słonimski’s poem, a pacifistic piece containing a revolutionary vision of hope.
