International Festival Wratislavia Cantans

Friday Sep 3 - Sunday Sep 12       Pl. Wolności 1

The Wratislavia Cantans, also referred to as the International Festival of Oratorio and Cantata Music, is one of the most important classical music festivals in Central Europe. For over 50 years, the festival has been enchanting audiences with music ranging in its repertoire from the Middle Ages to the modern day.

The theme of the 2021 edition of the festival is 'Crossing Borders' - an adept way of looking at how music not only crosses borders, put pushes boundaries, and a reminder of the restriction of movement and closure of music halls that we have all experienced over the past year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The opening concert will feature the outstanding mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožena and NFM Wrocław Philharmonic conducted by Duncan Ward, and explore the relationship between music described as ‘classical’ and folk music, while Gaetano Pugnani’s Werther and Arnold Schoenberg’s 'Pierrot lunaire' will explore the relationship between music and the spoken word. Agata Zubel and Wolfgang Mitterer will improvise late-night, while Quatuor Mosaïques - one of the best string quartets playing historical instruments - will perform pieces from Beethoven’s middle and late periods.
