Volendam and Edam are not connected to the Dutch railway system, nevertheless it’s easy to reach both towns by public transport. Buses to Volendam and Edam leave from the newly built bus station on the northern side of Amsterdam Centraal, at the upper level. Bus numbers 110, 118 and 316 are all good for both Volendam and Edam; the journey takes about 30 minutes and it costs between €3.50 and €4. For Volendam, the bus stops called Zeestraat (for lines 110 and 118) and Julianaweg (line 316) are the closest ones to the town’s highlights. If you’re travelling to Edam, you can also take line 314 and 317. All bus lines mentioned stop at Edam’s bus station, which is a few walking minutes away from the town centre. Travelling by car, all you need to do is follow road N247, which connects Amsterdam with Volendam and Edam.
 
Another great way to reach Volendam is by bicycle. The cycling trip takes you through some gorgeous polder landscapes and villages, along the shores of IJsselmeer. For the most scenic route, follow the signs with LF21 written on them. This route is called the Zuiderzeeroute and takes you past the villages Durgerdam, Ransdorp, Zuiderwolde, Monnickendam and Katwoude before reaching Volendam. An average cyclist can complete the 32-kilometre journey in about 1.5 hours, but you might want to add some time for stops along the way.
