1. Fairytale Landscapes

The city's picturesque parks and gardens transform into winter wonderlands. The iconic Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage site, adorned with a fresh blanket of snow, offers a surreal landscape straight from a fairy tale. Frozen waterfalls, a medieval castle and the impressive Schloss Wilhelmshöhe are all easy to include in a winter walk through the park. Don't miss out the Greenhouse next to the Schloss! If you done walking the Hills of Wilhelmshöhe, go downtown to the Karlsaue Park for more picturesque strolls.

2. Christmas markets

Kassel's Christmas markets are a feast for the senses. The aroma of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts fills the air as vendors offer handmade crafts and seasonal treats. The smaller ones are at Königsplatz and Opernplatz, with the main and largest one on the Friedrichplatz. Its festive lights and joyful atmosphere, plus the daily rides from Santa over all the Glühwein stands and carousels is a must-visit

3. Cultural Delights

Winter in Kassel doesn't mean a quiet cultural scene. The city's museums and galleries continue to host captivating exhibitions, providing a warm refuge for art enthusiasts. Let the Grimmwelt take you on a tour through the work and lives of the Brother Grimms, or the dive into the Hessen Kassel Hertigage with all its locations and exhibitions.

4. Downhill sledging everywhere and ice skating in the park

There are plenty of hills in Kassel and usually enough snowy days during winter. The most famous ride is the hill in front of the Schoss Wilhelmshöhe. The illuminated area is the perfect place to bring your Glühwein and try to avoid the trees at the end. If you do not want to bring food and drinks, try the smaller hill at the Herbsthäuschen and stop there for some "Apré-Sledge". Four artifical slides are placed in the Treppenstrasse, a 70 meter ride on sliding mats. With colder weather there are several spots in the Karlsaue Park and the Bergpark perfect for ice skating. The small lake Lac in Wilhelmshöhe and the all the moats down in the Auepark.

5. Visit the Kassel Stadtmuseum

With a rich and turbulent history and its 1.110 year history, Kassel has plenty of stories to tell. From the "Landgrafs" who have changed the landscape of the city, to its destruction in the last years of WWII. For the complete history summary, the Stadtmuseum is worth a visit. Do not miss the model of Old Kassel right after the devastating bombing raids, which is part of an expansive media installation of the permanent exhibition.

6. Cozy Cafés and Restaurants

Warm up with a cup of rich hot chocolate or a steaming mug of coffee at one of Kassel's cozy cafés. The city's restaurants also offer hearty local dishes that provide the perfect warmth during the colder months.
