In their rush to get to the beach, many visitors to Lithuania’s stunning sandy pine-and-dune coastline bypass Klaipėda. Which is a mistake, because it has some of the Baltic region’s most enjoyable nightlife. Even when the weather’s not that great.
Central Klaipėda is pretty compact. With one or two exceptions, the best of the city’s bars and clubs lie close to the Rive Danė – along Žvejų (Fishermen’s) Street and the riverside, where half-hidden nightspots in converted warehouses come alive in the Old Town, or on or around Naujojo Sodo Street.
Being a bar in Klaipėda is a tricky business due to the long low season. So to maximise revenues many double as restaurants and vice versa, depending on the time of day, where locals and foreigners enjoy themselves in a lively, crowded, almost clubby environment fuelled by hyperactive staff and loud music.
