Set inside a former Tsarist prison your tour begins on the ground floor, where a walk around the former cells allows visitors to glimpse depressing sights like huge, rusty restraints, a pitch-black isolation cell and playing cards and chess sets produced by the inmates. From there the museum is a chronological journey on the "Roads to Independence" experienced in the city, covering the years 1791-1921. The 1905 workers' revolution is covered in detail, with prisoners letters and presses used to print inflammatory leaflets all on display. There is a new exhibition entitled "The Prison on Długa St. In Łódź from 1885-1953". Hugely interesting, though the paucity of English-language translations is guaranteed to frustrate.
