Each year on the last weekend of September, Light Move Festival (aka LMF) lights up the centre of Łódź with 2D/3D mappings, large-format projections, animations, and other kinetic light art installations created by a roster of international artists. One of the city's most popular festivals, locals flock into the streets to see each year's designs projected onto some of the city's most iconic buildings and public spaces, turning sometimes-drab Łódź into a metropolis bursting with colour and energy.
Crowds flood Piotrkowska Street after dark during Lódź's Light Move Festival.
This edition - the festival's 15th, with a theme of 'Returns' (Powroty) - emphasises the combination of sound and visuals with nine diverse musical stages across the city centre, each focussed on a different genre. A variety of performers, from Polish pop stars like Mery Spolsky to rappers like Eldo, will take the stages after dark, adding another layer of excitement to the festivities. The festival's Main Stage will be the balcony of Poznański Palace, with other stages located at Park Staromiejski (The Move Stage), Sienkiewicz Park (Chill Stage), Schiller's Passage (Film Stage), Piotrkowska 54 (Jazz Stage), Moniuszko 5 (Electro Stage), Plac Wolności (Classical Stage) and Stary Rynek (Club Stage). There's also a Kids Zone in Sienkiewicz Park, plus street food and even merchant stalls set up along Piotrkowska Street. With such a rich artistic programme spilling throughout the streets of the city - and all of it free - this is no doubt one of the most exciting weekends to visit Łódź. Visit their website for the festival map and full programme, and let there be light!
