Kyra Tabea Balderer plays with our sense of perception. As soon as one hears that her works are photographs, one almost feels like touching them because of the contradiction between this information and what we see. Her photographic works are extremely similar to paintings and, for a two-dimensional medium, have surprising features such as haptic qualities and depth. The artist achieves this by genuinely photographic means: she uses light and shade deliberately and chooses focus and depth of field with great precision when photographing her constructions with her large format camera. Her photographs are made exclusively of self-made objects: bricolage sculptures made of simple materials, which she then paints colourfully. Her works cleverly combine sculpture, painting and photography, in the individual image as well as in the installation presentation.
