[closed] Tropenhaus Wolhusen
Located in Wolhusen, 20km west of Lucerne, this tropical garden in a huge greenhouse is home to 120 different tropical plants. The space is split into an 'experience' and a 'production' section. In the former (1900m2) you'll stumble across mango, banana, papaya, cherimoya and kumquat crops as well as a tilapia fish farm, which helps to ensure that the surrounding plants receive the requisite nutrients. In the latter (5300 m2) it's possible to witness the harvesting of the crops. These are then used in the in-house Mahoi fine dining restaurant and in products that are sold in the shop, like the papaya moisturiser. A visit here entertains all of the senses from the sights, smells and sounds of the surrounding plant and animal life and the taste of exotic cuisine in the restaurant to the cultural programme, which includes art exhibitions, workshops and concerts. Take a train from Lucerne to Wolhusen (one direct train per hour, takes 17 minutes) and then it's a 10-minute bus ride up the hill to the Wolhusen Tropenhaus station.
Will close permanently on June 23, 2019.
