Established in 1984 in true Soviet style by workers at the neighbouring Minsk Automobile Plant, this 42-hectare menagerie features over 160 species of animal including eagle owls, brown bears, Egyptian fruit bats, llamas and others. As well as functioning as an ordinary zoo open to the general public, Minsk Zoo is also involved in several conservation and breeding programmes.
