Sibenik

A local’s guide to Šibenik — Azimut’s Hrvoje gives us the lowdown on Šibenik

25 Sep 2025

A former organiser of the legendary Terraneo Festival, Hrvoje Jelković traded the streets of Zagreb for the sun-washed stone of Šibenik, a charming Adriatic town nestled between Zadar and Split. There, he created Azimut, a vibrant cultural club that has been the city’s urban heartbeat for the past 12 years.

Set within atmospheric historic water cisterns, the club draws visitors from across the region and keeps the city alive year-round with its programme of music and art. Jelković now also leads the creative collective 4B, curating a scene that is anything but mainstream, and he shared with us his favourite corners of the city.

CIYP: Why Šibenik—and did you need time to adjust to a calmer life after busy Zagreb?
Hrvoje: Šibenik felt like a natural choice: a city with soul and a strong character, rich history, and vibrant cultural heritage. It’s tolerant, open, and spacious enough for new stories. Zagreb, my hometown, shaped me—gave me experience and pace—but Šibenik brought balance and peace. Of course, it took a little time to get used to a slower rhythm, but it’s actually far more natural and healthy.

CIYP: Is there a spot in town you visit when you want to enjoy a quiet coffee alone?
Hrvoje: I love having coffee on the waterfront, watching the boats and people. That simple moment is the perfect reset.

CIYP: Where would you take someone for a romantic dinner?
Hrvoje: My wife and I have our special place. It’s not in the city, but for us it’s the most magical spot in the world, and we don’t mind a short drive to Panorama at Roški Slap. Time stands still there—we often spend the whole day.

CIYP: Azimut is known for big groups and nights out. When you and your friends want a change of scenery, where do you go for a drink?
Hrvoje: We usually stay in the center—Šibenik has plenty of great little cafés and bars, so you can change the atmosphere without walking far.

CIYP: Now that you know the city well, what souvenir would you give a dear guest to remember Šibenik by?
Hrvoje: I’d give a bottle of wine or olive oil—you can’t go wrong. The wine disappears faster, the oil lasts longer, but both carry the scent of the Šibenik region.

CIYP: When you have a free weekend, what’s your favorite getaway?
Hrvoje: Weekends are always family time, and we most often head to Murter. We love its beaches and that gentle touch of wilderness.
