It remains a surprisingly little-known fact that one of the world’s most iconic dog breeds actually comes from Croatia, but once you put two and two together, it becomes blindingly obvious. The beautiful Dalmatian might have burst into public consciousness thanks to the wacky escapades of Pongo, Roger Radcliffe, Cruella de Vil and the rest, but there’s much more to these pups than famous Disney stories.

Recently opened in Šibenik, the Home of the Dalmatian Dog is a fabulous way to learn more about the hounds and their famous spots. The concept of a dog as a man’s best friend isn’t just a catchy tagline, and this charming museum delves deep into the long and storied relationship between Dalmatians and humans, exploring history, culture, biology, and a whole lot more along the way. And yes, there are real-life Dalmatians here waiting to be adored, so do send our regards to Dalma and Tino when you visit. Guided tours of the museum take place every hour on the hour, and be sure to call ahead if you are planning to visit with a large group. If you’re bringing pups of your own, be sure to keep them leashed during the visit.
