Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad Stadium

Solnechny bul. 25     more than a year ago
Built especially for the World Cup, the Kaliningrad stadium can be found on the banks of the Pregel river a 20-30 minute walk from the Fanzone and Kant Island. During the tournament it will host 35,000 fans following which capacity will be reduced to 25,000 at which point it will become the home stadium of local team FC Baltika Kaliningrad as well as Kaliningrad’s newest and most modern concert venue. Built at a cost of nearly 18 billion rubles (approx. €240 million), the area previously had laid empty. Early challenges with the soft sandy soil were overcome by bringing in huge trucks of sand to stabilize the site and the construction was completed a little behind schedule. Following the tournament the area will be developed to become a centre for community sports and activity.

Getting there

Details have not yet been published for transport arrangements on the match days. The local organizing committee’s website at kgd2018.ru has a transport section but this was only available in Russian, although it was due to be published in English as well. If that is still the case closer to the date you should check Транспорт (Transport) where diagrams will give you at least a picture of road closures.

Based on the travel arrangements used for one of the test matches played on May 12, here is what we expect and recommend.

The area around the stadium will only be accessible by foot or by public transport (unless you have a special pass). Shuttle buses will run from both the Severny (Northern) Railway Station (Route S2) and from the Yuznhy (Southern) Railway Station (Route S3). Both buses will operate from 3.5 hours before the match starts until 2 hours after the end of the match. Buses will run approximately every 10 minutes. We expect travel to be free of charge for those with a match ticket.

There will also be a Park & Ride service available from ulitsa Suzdalskaya on the eastern side of the city from where route S4 will ferry fans to and from the stadium every 10 minutes.

Your alternative is to walk and we intend to head to the Fan Fest in the Fan Zone next to the House of Soviets before each game before taking the 20-30 minute walk to the stadium from there. We could give you roads to walk down but they’ll be plenty of signposts and a lot of people doing the same. After the game it is likely to be the quickest way to get back to the Fan Fest and the centre too.
