Katowice

Silesian Tourism Organisation

Katowice Centre         more than a year ago
So you've arrived in Katowice, had a look around in the city and surrounding area and thought to yourself 'Wow, there's more to this place than I first thought!', and we wholeheartedly agree. To this end, we encourage you to visit other areas of interest across the greater Silesian region - you will not be disappointed. There's a lot to see, and Katowice is a great starting point for all trips. Starting in the city in places like the Silesian Museum and Nikiszowiec, and working outward, you can visit 42 sites connected to the Industrial Monuments Route, from factories to mines found on the UNESCO World Heritage List! Silesia may already be recognised by UNESCO for having one of Poland's 15 world heritage sights, in the form of the historic Silver mines in Tarnowskie Góry, and Katowice being a UNESCO City of Music (the global status certainly helps), but don't forget, there are certain places or things which just don't quite make the final lists that are nonetheless culturally important and unique. Silesia has much in the way of cultural heritage too.

If going back in time is your thing, follow the trail of wooden architecture too! Going further, you will find attractions connected to nature (and history!), in the form of the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura Upland, where you can also follow the trail of the Eagles' Nests - a fascinating walking route following 16 structures (mostly castles) built during the reign of Casimir III the Great on the then border of Poland, protecting it from invaders. The outdoor attractions don't end there, as you visit the crowning glory in the form of the Beskid mountain range, great for hillwalkers, cyclists and skiers alike! For foodies, or for anyone travelling in Silesia for any of their chosen trips, it's also advisable to try the local cuisine, and the Silesian Tourist Organisation has this very need in mind with their 'Silesian Tastes' culinary trail. Whatever your interests, the Silesian Tourism Organisation (Śląska Organizacja Turystyczna) is a fantastic resource that can help you with your planning! Happily visit their site for in-depth information, or visit the tourist information office in Katowice's main square for a wealth of useful resources and guides to the gems of Silesia.
