Exhibition «Revival from ruins. Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior on Kovalevo Field and its frescoes» is open in the Church of St George In The Marketplace (Yaroslav`s Courtyard). There are kovalevskiye frescoes, which were created according to the unique method of A.P. Grekov and V.B. Grekova and were mounted on titanium shields, and which were considered irrevocably lost after the destruction of the Church during the Second World War.
In the post-war years, on the initiative of the great Russian art historian V.N. Lazarev, Special Commission of the Ministry of culture decided to try to save at least a small part of the fragments of frescoes which were in the thick of debris. During the next two years a researcher of the Central scientific-restoration workshop V.B. Grekova brought together the archive materials and identified technology trends. In 1965 under the guidance of the artist-restorer A.P. Grekov the brigade of the same workshop began the work which is continued to this day. The method of dismantling the rubble was developed and used during this work, which allowed by means of collection of recoverable scattered fragments to restore deleted images. The frescoes, which were collected with the help of this method, are mounted on special titanium shields, which were made according to the project of A.P. Grekova and V.B. Grekov. You can see the images, which have been already assembled and completed, in this exhibition. More than 200 square meters of frescoes are in the process of revival from ruins.
