E. Wedel Chocolate Lounge

  ul. Szpitalna 8 ,   City Centre          (+48) 22 827 29 16     more than a year ago

The reason everyone at Czekolady Wedel looks like they’re in a daze is because this is the mothership of chocolate cafes, ground zero for all things dark, milk and achingly sweet. Wedel is the country's longest established chocolate manufacturer and one of the best known brands in Poland. This classy venue, featuring comfortable seating in room after room of tables, is located in what was once the factory and cafe of the Wedel business. You'll still be able to taste the original chocolate creations of its founders which were so popular that Karol Wedel had to introduce a factory seal carrying his signature to combat the number of forged 'Wedel' products that were filling the market in the 1860s. The menu here is impressive in both its size and scope, covering every variety of chocolate drink, dessert, truffle and ice cream dish imaginable. Chocolate comas are inevitable. Try their other city centre location on Krakowskie Przedmieście 45.

These two chocolate-drinking rooms go back to communist times. Back in the early 1990's the cloakroom attendant was the funniest crackerjack who told humerous stories about his youth in Stalinist Poland of the late 1940's and 1950's. Without this jokester and his stories the lounge now has a much more serious corporate feel. The service is excellent and the beverage selection is much wider than it was 20 years ago so it's still very much worth visiting for a cup of liquid chocolate. A great place to meet up with a friend or to read a book over a cup of chocolate on a rainy afternoon.
