The project “Late Polishness” is dedicated to the form of modern Polish identity. There are more than 100 works on display along with discussions, lectures and screenings. How is Polish identity shaped today? What pictures, symbols and figures is it connected to? Creators from different generations have been invited to answer these questions. Polishness can be seen through different prisms; political, existential and personal. Stanisław Szukalski’s (1893-1987) works are key to the exhibit. He was a sculptor, painter and designer who searched for modern national art after Poland regained independence in 1918. Important research covers postcolonial theory which allowed for the re-interpretation of Kresy (the borderlands), democracy and partition. An integral part of the exhibit are also two visual essays and a discussion by specialists dr. Paweł Rojek, prof. Lechosław Lameński and dr Maria Kobielska. “Late Polishness” required the confrontation of ideals like neoliberal capitalism, postcolonialism, multiculturalism and the new distribution of information in the cyber era. Attendees will be confronted with tough questions concerning how Poland has been shaped after 1989.
