There should be a special place in hell for women who do not support other women”, “I think-feel-decide”, “I hate to hate”, “I fear people not wild boar” – these are just some of the slogans to appear in the Subversive wall-hanging exhibition in the Ethnographic Museum in Wrocław. A traditional embroidered wall-hanging, ‘makatka’ – once associated with domestic kitsch, is today becoming a medium of subversive content, a transformation from the domestic, private setting, into something loud and public, often seen in art galleries and feminist protests. The exhibition aims to present the whole spectrum of subjects covered by contemporary artists using needlework.
