Lucian Freud (1922-2011) was born in Berlin yet is regarded one of Britain’s most renowned artists. In 1933, being the grandson of Sigmund Freud, he was forced to leave Germany with his family and flee to the UK. His figurative works number among the masterpieces of the twentieth century. Fifty of his etchings are now being shown in Berlin for the first time, all on loan from the UBS Art Collection. Freud developed his works through the close observation of people, and his portraits are examples of intensive analytical contemplation and, at the same time, they are moving studies of transience.
