Ballets adapting the story of 'Don Quixote', the Spanish epic written by Miguel de Cervantes, have been performed as early as 1614. Over the next 400 years, dozens of works using the knight errand theme were created, but it was the ballet choreographed by the legendary Marius Petipa with music by Ludwig A. Minkus (1869) that permanently entered the repertoire of ballet world. Passed down by subsequent generations of choreographers, the popularity of this ballet is associated with the picturesque colours of old Spain, and its many memorable characters - the knight of La Mancha, the comical Sancho Panza the clumsy Gamache, and the alluring gypsies and finely-dressed toreadors that help bring the story to life! Furthermore, the figures of Kitri and Basilio are second to none in the classical repertoire in terms of charm, temperament and dance virtuosity. All of this culminates in a thrilling revue of classical dance in Spanish style. See 'Don Kichot' at the Grand Theatre in Łódź.
