Tankman's Square

ul. Żarska, Żagań     more than a year ago
Today Żagań is the base of the King Jan III Sobieski 11th Lubuska Armoured Cavalry Division, the successor of the 1st Polish Armoured Division (the division has inherited the nicknames ‘the Blacks’ from its famous predecessor). Led in WWII by the legendary General Stanislaw Maczek (1892-1994), the 1st Armoured Division played a key role in the battle against the Nazis in France and the Low Countries in 1944-45 and the General, who lived out his life in Scotland and was forced to work as a bartender to get by, is honoured with a statue showing him standing in the turret of his tank. Alongside his statue can be found four actual tanks – a T-34, T-55, T-72 and an M-36 Sherman. For those with an interest in Polish military history this is worth a visit and for those with connections to the forces who fought under Maczek, something of a shrine.
