Born in Riga in 1938, photorealistic artist Vija Celmins became a refugee during WWII eventually emigrating with her family to the United States. Her drawings of the ocean, night skies and other natural landscapes that look like photographs are now exhibited in the world’s most renowned repositories of modern art including the Met (NYC), the Tate (London), the Pompidou Centre (Paris) and the San Francisco MOMA.
