Assaf Gruber is a sculptor and filmmaker who dances along the fine line which separates the private and public spheres. He is fascinated with the individual—the choices one makes, the way these choices are acted out in the individual's day-to-day life, and the way they bounce further, reverberating back out into the world around them as a whole, embodied in public and cultural institutions, and reaching as far as global politics. The exhibit comprises about 70 minutes-worth of film pieces, each built around fictional narratives. The films are complemented by photographs and sculptures that further explore the complexities of Western culture, religion, and nature, especially highlighting the tensions and inter-dependent relationships between them. Rather than taking the fictional storylines at face value, the artist urges us to dig deeper—arguing that a rumour based on fiction can still be authentic, and it is actually in its strange narrative that it serves to initiate dialogue.
