Warsaw

The 'Doll House'

ul. Hoża 70 ,   City Centre         more than a year ago
Right in the centre of Warsaw, amidst towering multistorey apartment buildings, you'll find a surprisngly diminutive residence dubbed the 'Doll House' by locals due to its small stature and the three gabled dormer windows that give it a Victorian flair. In fact this charming house was built in the early 20th century as part of a chemical dye factory. It somehow survived demolition during and after WWII as much taller buildings rose around it, blocking out most of its access to light. Although it is two storeys, the building is dwarfed by the tenements around it, an effect exaggerated by the building's chimney, which is more than twice the height of the building itself as it reaches upwards along the back wall of the neighbouring tenement. Today this small wonder is a one-family residence and you can see it if you sneak into the courtyard of Hoża 70.
