Anyone with an interest in Japanese culture is going to love this. 'The World of the Ainu' is a temporary exhibition, created in 2015 and currently on loan from the City Museum in Żory, shining a light on the Ainu people of Japan and the efforts to save their indigenous way of life. Surprisingly, the spearhead of these efforts was a Pole, ethnographer Bronisław Piłsudski (older brother of Marshal Józef), finding himself exiled to Sakhalin after a plot to assassinate the Tsar was uncovered. He put his time there to good use, documenting Ainu traditions, beliefs and rituals. The exhibition contains objects from everyday life, such as tools, clothes and contemporary traditional souvenirs, emphasising the changes to the peoples' culture over the last 150 years.
